Opportunity description

Emmaus Salford is a progressive local organisation which provides a home, work and companionship for previously homeless people and which serves the community by collecting, refurbishing, and recycling surplus and discarded goods.

The role

We wish to recruit a new treasurer.

We need someone, a qualified accountant, who will join the trustee board and help direct Emmaus Salford towards achieving its mission and help ensure that the organisation is effectively managed.

You would need to be able to make a commitment to Emmaus and to Emmaus' principles, have social concern, independent judgement, and a willingness to speak your mind.

The trustees meet as a board 12 times each year.

The community has competent admin and finance staff in post, so the treasurer does not have to undertake routine book-keeping. He or she will have oversight of financial and accounting operations and will:

  • provide regular reports to the board

  • prepare annual budgets and longer-term financial plans

  • prepare annual accounts and ensure compliance with accounting regulations

  • liaise with our independent examiners

  • advise on relevant tax issues, including VAT and gift aid.

Required skills

  • Accountancy
  • Financial management

Person description

  • Qualified accountant.
  • Happy to work with co-operatively with community staff, community members, and with other trustees.

What impact the opportunity will have

A new treasurer will help us achieve our aim of becoming completely financially self-sustaining by April 2019.

What’s in it for the volunteer?

We are on an exciting journey; a growing community and a growing social enterprise; a growing contribution to the health and welfare of some of our society's most disadvantaged people.

Time commitment

Either in or out of office hours

Board meetings are currently monthly*; the treasurer also needs to spend some time with admin and finance staff. * with plans to move to bi-monthly.
