We are looking to recruit a Welfare and employment policy advisory panel member.

The role

The Policy Advisory Panel helps the MS Society develop our policy positions. As a member of the Panel, you will look at our plans for developing policy and advice on the final proposed organisation positions. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people living with MS.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience with a large charity, develop your existing skills and learn new ones.

You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally.

Person description

What specific skills, experience and abilities you need for this role

  • Specific expertise or insight into; the UK welfare and benefits systems, and UK government policies on employment and HR and as a person living with or affected by MS, personal experience of the welfare/disability benefits system or the impact of MS on employment

  • A keen commitment to improving services available to people affected by MS

  • Ability to review and analyse evidence, including statistical data, in a balanced and considered way

  • Some knowledge of the policy-making processes of the UK and relevant government bodies surrounding welfare/ disability benefits and employment. This knowledge can either be at a UK or Nation level.

  • Willingness to share skills, knowledge and experience of services and support for people affected by MS

What impact the opportunity will have

The Policy Advisory Panel helps the MS Society develop our policy positions. As a member of the Panel, you will look at our plans for developing policy and advice on the final proposed organisation positions. You will use your knowledge, experience and expertise to make sure our positions represent the views of our community. The welfare and employment panel mainly focuses on issues under our MS Enough campaign.

What’s in it for the volunteer?

You may be asked to advise on the wording of our policy position statements, attending policy workshops or focus groups and helping us identify key policy opportunities and threats in the welfare and employment area.

We meet up as a group over email and telephone, with the potential for a face to face meeting to review our activity and achievements over the year.
