Afghanistan and Central Asian Association

Objectives

ACAA is a community-charity based in South- East London which aims to aid the integration of migrants and refugees from Afghanistan and Central Asia living in the UK.

ACAA offers a mentoring programme, which aims to meet the individual concerns of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants who have come to the UK from Afghanistan and Central Asian countries. This service provides individuals with the opportunity to receive one-to-one assistance and guidance from one of our mentors, personalised to their needs.

Through the legal advice ACAA is dealing with issues such as unemployment, domestic violence, divorce, forced marriage, murder and kidnapping. The Centre in Kabul has become a real hub for helping people find employment, including women – both women graduates who are unable to find work and women who are single parents as their partners have died or are overseas or unable to work. In Pul-e Khumri we provide many educational sessions for children and our maths class is very popular with young girls. Our lawyer in Pul-e Khumri has also started working to defend women’s rights in the local prison, many of whom have been convicted of ‘moral crimes’ such as running away from an abusive relationship.

Activities

Through evaluations, monitoring of the service being carried, we make sure we are in the right track. We try to clearly understand the needs of each people who come to us and give them the best advice and service. At the end we will ask them to give us feedback on the service given to them and if there are still some concerns we make sure to deal with it. We hold informal meetings with mostly mentees who go to school and ask them about their improvements and progress
