Auckland Youth and Community Centre

Objectives

We help children, young people and their families on the Woodhouse Close estate, Bishop Auckland, and the surrounding areas. Woodhouse Close is one of the most socio-economically disadvantaged estates in England. Our services for children and young people include After Schools and Youth Clubs, Out of Schools Childcare and creche provision: various sessions of each per week. Our activities for adults include regular fitness sessions (e.g. metafit, boxercise) and use of our sports hall by various local clubs / groups e.g. football, archery, martial arts, table tennis and learning disability groups. We also hire our other facilities (e.g. meeting rooms, kitchen, computer room) to local groups, including those working alongside us to improve the health, wellbeing and skills of our community. Our impact is significant. We are a well respected local community hub of over 50 years' service and our role within the community is highly valued, with over 14,000 individual visits to the Centre last year, a figure which continues to increase. All of our services are highly affordable and accessible - this remains an essential part of what we do. One example of our strong economic impact within the community is our Ofsted-registered childcare provision which we keep very affordable to help to enable local parents and carers to remain in employment. Our intention is to continue to work extremely hard to meet the significant and complex needs of our local community; our dedicated staff and volunteers work hard to maintain, and where possible enhance, our provision to help us to achieve this.

Activities

Out of School childcare: Quality childcare for children aged 4 to 13 years; open Monday to Friday from 3:00pm to 6:00pm during school term time and from 8:00am to 6:00pm during school holidays.
After School Club: For children aged 4 to 11 years, with qualified staff and local volunteers providing a wide range of activities; open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, from 3:30pm to 5:00pm.
Youth Club: Delivered by qualified Durham County Council youth workers for young people aged 11-19 (up to 24 if they have additional needs); open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings; offering a variety of activities plus participation in wider programmes in the area e.g. Youth Forum.

In addition, we provide services and activities which help to address the complex range of problems associated with being one of the most socio-economically disadvantaged estates in England. Working with our key strategic partners and many other local organisations, our major themes include:

• Extensive work with children and young people as described above
• Health improvement - working with local providers to improve local residents’ health by providing more healthy lifestyle and advice sessions (e.g. healthy eating) and working with (or creating new) 'doorstep' clubs to get more people active and healthy
• Wellbeing - expanding our drop-in facilities to cover advice sessions (including health trainers, Citizens’ Advice, housing and careers advice, MP’s and Councillors’ surgeries) and providing more activities to help tackle social isolation for a wider cross-section of the community
• Training and skills development - offering more training opportunities to help young people and adults to develop their skills and prepare for employment, also utilising our good relationships with local schools and colleges to help to broaden our offer
• Volunteering - supporting and developing existing and new volunteers
• Support for targeted groups e.g. young people not in education, employment or training (NEET)
• Helping to tackle crime, support local integration and improve community cohesion e.g. by close working with local police / PCSOs and other agencies..
