Proms at St Jude’s is a well-established and highly regarded music and literary festival held in Hampstead Garden Suburb every June. The main venue is St Jude-on-the-Hill but it is a secular intergenerational festival appealing to the whole community. The aim is to stage a major cultural event which encourages an appreciation of music and literature and involves everyone in a unique and positive manner, by bringing people together through the common bonds of love of music/books and the spirit of volunteering. Virtually all the planning and event organisation is undertaken by local volunteers. During festival week this includes a “crew” of young people and stewards from all walks of life, There are 9 evening concerts given by internationally renowned performers, ranging from solo recitals and chamber music to jazz and opera. The 7 lunchtime concerts (featuring rising stars of the music world) are free-of-charge and are well supported by local schools, families and groups from local care homes. The ‘hands-on’ family concerts are designed to nurture an interest in music by children. The LitFest weekend sees eight authors take the stage for an interview, audience questions and then book signings. Over 200 volunteers and over 5,000 concertgoers enjoy the performances, and we raise about £50,000 a year for the charities we support.
