Teso Educational Support Services (TESS) has supported young girls and orphans into education in Teso (North Eastern Uganda) for over ten years. Through our sponsorship programme more than 350 young people in Teso have now been able to access secondary education and beyond. In the UK the Country Manager finds new sponsors with the help of the Board of Trustees, whilst the Ugandan team support the students on a day to day basis. The charity focuses on Teso as this is one of the poorest regions of Uganda, and Sub-Saharan Africa as it has been affected by 25 years of political, health and environmental issues and this has left many girls and orphans without access to education beyond primary school.
In the UK the Country Manager fundraises through a range of income generating activities such as Grant and Trust applications and also speaking at a wide range of small groups such as WIs, Rotary Clubs and Schools. Through a wide range of promotional activities new sponsors are sought with the aim that they cover the £360 a year cost per student.
In Uganda the team visit students at home and at school, tracking their progress and supporting the students in their educational and emotional development. We are proud that more than 150 students have now completed their education and most are in full time work, providing financial support for younger family members. Our two main members of staff are former sponsored students and they inspire our students about what they achieve every day!
